The tragedy of Othello is one of the genius pieces done by William Shakespeare. It revolves around two central characters, Othello and Lago. Othello is the Moor of Venice while Iago is an ensign. Othello has a wife, Desdemona and a loyal lieutenant known as Cassio. The play has huge significance in theaters mainly because it portrays different themes such as betrayal, revenge, jealously and racism among many others.
Iago hates Othello because of promoting the young Cassio and plots a revenge plan. He also believes that Othello slept with his wife. His revenge plan works when Othello is convinced that Desdemona has committed adultery and stabs her to death. However, immediately afterwards, Othello realizes that Iago was wrong all along, and hence decides to take his life.
One of the portrayed in the tragedy of Othello is that of jealousy. Othello is jealous enough to kill his wife even after she claimed to be innocent. His mind is fixated in the idea that he has been betrayed and cannot see the hypocritical side of Iago or even listen to the voice of reason. Still, there is the theme of pride in the play. Othello is proud of his achievements and honor and cannot bear the thought of Desdemona hurting that pride by committing adultery. When he finally realizes that his wife was innocent yet he had killed her, he chooses to die rather than face the consequences.
Another theme in the tragic play is that of racial prejudice. The only reason why Iago’s plan works is because of racial prejudice in the Venetian society. Othello does not feel good enough for Desdemona because of his race. Yet, Desdemona loves him regardless. Because of the Othello’s thoughts of inferiority, he is unable to share his concerns with her, making it possible for Iago’s scheme to work out perfectly.
Good versus evil is also seen in the play as Iago keeps manipulating people to achieve his goal of revenge. Othello is good man yet has flaws that can be manipulated easily by the evil Iago. This ends up hurting the good and innocent people such as Desdemona and Emilia. At the end of it all, neither the good nor the evil people succeed since Iago is punished while Othello, Desdemona and Emilia end up dead. Many other themes can be identified in the play including order versus chaos, self knowledge, magic, and appearance versus reality. Truly, tragedy of Othello is full of interesting themes that are relevant in the modern in life and in theaters.
