One of the most important things to every human and animal is food. We all strive for survival by ensuring that we have something to eat which in most cases we don’t get enough in quantity and nutrient wise. The demand for a huge quantity of food at cheaper price has led to an increase in innutritious but huge quantity foods. The nutritious and moderate foods are now regarded as organic foods while the innutritious food are known to be junk foods. Junk foods includes snacks, sweet desserts and other foods that have high level of calories derived from fat and sugar.
Snacks and sweet desserts are mostly regarded as the only junk food; I believe that all chemically grown foods are junk foods. Junk foods are common in our society, they are inexpensive and majorly bought by the following group of people: poor, uninformed (people that are not aware of the implications of junk foods) and the busy ones (people that are informed and rich but can’t create time to healthy foods). Unlike junk foods, organic foods are quite expensive and rare (organic grocers are not ubiquitous). Organic grocers are mostly located in rich men’s area. My school is located in a rich men’s area and I know of three organic grocers in the mall that never had low customer traffic. The only cheap store in the mall does not get as many people as the other three because everyone knows the nature of the foods in that store.
Junk and organic foods have economic and health implications. My micro-economics teacher always ask the following question for illustration purposes, why do you think there is Walmart in the center of town and Trader Joe is at Green Hills? Walmart is a store for the middle class and it is located in an area closer to both the poor and the rich while Trader Joe is an organic food store and it is located in rich men’s area. The low-income based stores are very good for the economy because it provides food for those that cannot afford good and expensive food. On the other hand, it does not help their health. It is known that most of the obese people in America are middle-class or poor people.
Organic and junk foods are good but the organic ones are more nutritious to our bodies. Junk foods help the less-privileged which in turns help the economy with cheap labor and decreased crime rate (many criminals do what they do because they can’t feed themselves).
