Organize your books onto a bookshelf if you have one. Organize your papers into their proper folders. Keep your desktop empty unless you absolutely need something there. Many people feel the need to fill up their workspace with personal trinkets but, let’s be honest, you are there to work.
Next: think about how your furniture affects the “flow” of your office. Is it easy for guests to sit in chair adjacent to your desk? Do you have too many chairs or other types of furniture in the office blocking the view? How large is your desk? Does it need to be that large? These things can affect the time it takes to get from your door to your seat in your office. Over time, that small window of time can add up and become a real issue.
Think about these types of things when you are in your office and work on improving them a little bit each day. Small changes can add up and, if you are going to be working somewhere for a long time, it can pay dividends to get those improvements started as quickly as possible. Office layout, like it or not, can have a very real effect on your work productivity when you are at the job. Work productivity, likewise, translates into more options for you.
