A critique essay is an assignment that asks you to evaluate and analyze another’s work. The essay requires you to go through a complete and detailed study of the writing you critiquing, conducting a close analysis of the writer’s style, opinions, evidence, conclusions and more. Once you form your opinion, you need to articulate it in your essay.
Perhaps one of the best ways to learn this kind of writing, or any other type of writing, is to look for some examples. A simple internet search will procure a dozens of free essay examples for you to look out. However, you have no guarantees that the quality of these essays are up the level you need to master this type of paper, so it’s a good idea to check education websites or professional writing websites. Both will have ample examples of college and grad school levels that are great to learn from.
Never assume that your reader will know the work you are critiquing. In your introduction, state the title, the author and any historical context. You might also mention who the intended audience of the work is as well as place the work in context your reader will understand.
In the second paragraph write a summary of the written piece’s main ideas. Don’t add any evaluations or opinions. The summary should explain only the most important ideas as accurately as possible.
In the third paragraph you should evaluate the writer’s presentation. Did the author present his or her ideas clearly and concisely? Did the writer include good pieces of evidence? Was the work presented in a logical way? Your focus should be on stating whether the writer achieved his goals in creating the work.
Your next paragraph should clearly state both the points of agreement and disagreement. You should provide explanations for your opinions as well as cite other critics or written works to support your critique.
Your last paragraph, your conclusion, should restate in a few sentences your main objections and arguments to the written piece. Be sure not to mention any new ideas or anything that does not already show up in your body paragraphs. This should be no more than an overview to remind your reader of your critical arguments.
